*Insiders tipHluhluwe-iMolozi is Malaria free and very well priced which makes it a better option than Kruger for families with small children (in my opinion).

Today we took our long-awaited safari ride through Hluhluwe-iMolozi Park

If you don’t want the locals to give you a funny face, this is pronounced Schlew Schlewi

Although you can self drive the game park we chose Heritage Tours which was well worth the reasonable price (when compared to other options).

We stayed in the amazingly kid friendly St. Lucia at a reasonably priced self catering cottage called Stokkiesdraai.  There may be more impressive places to stay in St. Lucia, but when you look at the cost, location and size of the units, it was really hard to beat.

The Hluhluwe-iMolozi Game Park Safari with Heritage Tours

Hluhluwe-iMolozi Park Heritage Tours with Kids

The morning started early and we got our times mixed up but we were headed off to the park by 6AM.  Usually the safari starts out at 5 AM, it is a 1 hour ride to the park and this allows for the best viewing of the large cats: Tigers and Leopards.

We were the only ones on the safari drive which was wonderful because the kids could have full range of the tall truck and their attention span was able to be catered to as well as their stomachs and bathroom rights.

We were lucky because our guide John said they are busy year round going out everyday.  It just so happens the first two weeks of September is the low time for St Lucia.

We didn’t see any cats, not sure if this is because we lost that 1st hour in the morning or as John said sometimes as a cold front moves in the cats tend to not show up; just something he has noticed.

We did see their paw prints though as well as plenty of giraffe, white rhinos, wart hogs, impalas, Kudu, Zebras, hawks,  bumble bee eating bird, Eland (type of antelope; not related to deer), one elderly buffalo lying on the bank of the river and our last great encounter was three large male Elephants.

We and another truck had the pleasure of watching them pass through us as they walked down to the river bed.  Each on looked directly at us and flared their giant ears to show us who was boss.

The elephants at this park as to opposed to Addo Elephant Park are known to be much more aggressive so we kept our distance.  WildCrats  (a popular American animal show for kids) came in handy again and the kids were able to tell us all about the symbiotic relationship with the birds ( that sat on the backs of all the animals.

The White Rhino

IMG_4620-2Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is most famous for their conservation efforts to bring back the black and white rhinos.

Every year thousands are poached for their large horn which can be worth well over $900,000 US.  John said if nothing was done about the demand for the horns themselves that they could go extinct in less than 20 years.

We had the honor of seeing these animals up close and they are so ancient looking and really defenseless against poachers.  They have very poor eyesight and this makes it easy for poachers to sneak up on them when the wind is just right.   The rangers are almost helpless in stopping this from happening.   They are unable to cover such a vast area of the parks and even if they do come upon them they are unable to fire unless fired upon.  John says they are becoming even more brazen and will come in during the day.

Choosing a Safari that is Good For Kids

We opted for the half day safari option which cost $278 for 2 adults and 2 children.

The half day safari was plenty.   The seating consisted of padded bench seats in the back of a pick-up designed to have upper viewing and the hood of the truck was cut out so our driver could communicate with us easily.  He was so knowledgeable and the roads are so laden with pot holes, and dirt roads, not to mention poor signage in the park.

Well worth the money to not go through the park in your own vehicle.

If you’re debating between going to a private game reserve or visiting one of the smaller private game parks, you’ll have to weigh your options.

If you want a guaranteed chance of seeing all of the big five,  a private game park such as Schotia Safari’s near The Addo Elephant Park will be your best bet.

If you want to see how the animals truly interact in a large ecosystem which is much less “touristy” then visit one of the larger game parks and take a multi-day walking safari. Keep in mind, this is not an option with small kids below the age of 12.

If you do choose to see the big five in a private game reserve,  my feeling now is don’t feel like this is unnatural.  All of South Africa’s big five are fenced in.   There is no such thing as a true African wildlife safari that we may have dreamed of as little children.  Humans have now overtaking their environment, yes, all of it.

The landscape was all control burned.   They do this every year in the spring before the summer rains.   This mimics the natural occurring fires.  The fire takes down all the brown vegetation and allows the green new vegetation/grasses to sprout again.  Only the green grasses provide enough protein for the animals.

Before the park was formed, naturally the animals would roam from one area to the next seeking out these green grasses. They are now in a 7 year drought and all the rivers are very low.

We made Plettenberg Bay our 5’th stop on our 5 week tour of South Africa adventure:  Cape Town → Hermanus  → Oudtshoorn →  Wilderness  →   then here at Plettenberg Bay.

Plettenberg Bay is a perfect stop for families. It has nice family beaches, a quaint downtown, reasonably price accommodations (on the off season at least) and great activities for adults and kids alike.

Breakdown of costs for 3 nights and 3 full days for a family of 4 in Plettenberg Bay

  • Accommodations –  $226  for 3 nights in a 4 star B&B (we splurged)
  • Excursions – $110
  • Groceries – $41 (lasting 4 days)
  • Eating out – $36

Total cost:  $413

Things to do with families in Plettenberg Bay

All the guidebooks and the millions of pamphlets that populate the walls of every public enterprise around South Africa will lead you to three places:

  1. Birds of Eden
  2. Tenikwa
  3. Monkeyland

Surprisingly, I enjoyed these place in this order, completely the opposite of what I thought heading into our journey.

Birds of Eden

Birds of Eden – This place was a delight, honestly amazing! Walking into the dome you will definitely feel like you are a tribute in the hunger games. That is where the parallels end, well except for the talking birds of course.

This can be done on the same day as Monkeyland, although we did this second and by the end our kids were tired and wanting to be carried.  We had some great food and played with the adventurous birds during our mealtime.

Tenikwa

Tenikwa – I would say this was right on par with Monkeyland. The only reason I am ranking it third here is because this might be the only place in the world you can interact one on one with Cheetahs, Servile’s and African wildcats. Our kids loved it and so did we.

There are two options for small children. You cannot take kids under the age of 16 on the morning and evening cat walks (the cats will want to eat them) so you can do the 1 hour standard tour or you can do the 2 hour children focused learning tour. We opted for the 1 hour tour because in our experience this is about right at the point our 4 year old starts to lose focus. If you have kids 6 and up I would do the 2 hour tour. Make sure you book in advance.

Monkeyland

Monkeyland – Just one hour like Tenikwa but it will be a memorable one. Interact (but don’t touch) the monkeys. We loved the spider monkeys and all it was very educational. Neat being in the enclosure right along with the monkeys.

I would recommend doing this first then going over and checking out the Birds of Eden which is self guided and can be enjoyed att an easy going pace.

Where to Stay with Kids in Plettenberg Bay

Swallow’s Nest: We ended up at a B&B ran by a Dutch couple and their son. We talked them down to 700 rand a night for a really nice 2 bedroom cottage overlooking the entire bay. They had a good internet connection a small pool (that was too cold for the kids unfortunately) and the best part…. The most amazing breakfast I have ever had.

Honestly I would probably recommend the beach-side backpackers just because their location is a bit better and it is probably a bit more budget friendly for families but this breakfast was so good I may actually consider going back someday for that alone.

Eat:

We made breakfast our one big meal and prepared sandwiches and the like at home for the rest of the time. But there are tons of quaint small restaurants in town that can be enjoyed, there is a nice big grocery store in the center of town which we used to buy our food.

To fly around the world with a family of four, including taxes, with multiple stops in various directions, using airline miles only for a single flight back home cost us:

$11,561

* Again, we were able to use airline miles accrued through our Chase Ink Bold and Chase Sapphire (my wife’s card) to pay for our flight home. Besides this, we used no airline miles on our big flights.

If you take a look at our itinerary (also see below), I think this is actually a steal!

How did we do this?

We Used Indie!

Indie a subsidiary of AirTreks is an extremely underrated around the world travel planner by Bootsnall.

I will be writing a blog post about the process through Indie in the future, but if you are planning a multi-destination trip with children I honestly believe there is just no better way!

What to do with Kids in Cape Town

Start with the city bus tour

There are three routes:

  1. Blue:  The blue line is a long route that goes up an around table mountain back down to the water through Houte Bay and then along the beachfront past the VA waterfront.
  2. Yellow: Yellow is a small loop that goes around district 6 and Bo Kapp and the downtown district.
  3. Red:  The red route covers the front side of Table Mountain and takes you to Table Top Mountain and the Lookout.

This is a great way to take in the city and an absolute must if you are with kids. If you have a car, I would still recommend keeping it put and letting somebody else to the driving. Your ticket comes with a free boat ride and city walking tour good for 3 days.

Table Mountain

Take the funicular – At the top is a spectacular array of dry short brush and interesting rock formations. The kids loved climbing the rocks while we took in the view.

We spent 3-4 hours there hiking, exploring and photographing the area.  Make sure you book your trip to Table Mountain ahead of time – we didn’t because we didn’t know what day we were going, but what we found out (while researching the day of our trip) that you can book your trip and your ticket is good for up to two weeks. Worth saving an hour of wait time for sure.

Robbin Island

Small kids love the ferry ride for its speed and big wave jumping adventure. After you exit the ferry you have a 45 minute bus tour followed by a 45 minute trip inside the prison. Our small children enjoyed being in the prison and seeing penguins on the island.

It was a full day adventure though and I wouldn’t plan on doing too much afterword’s.

Boulders and the Penguins

Despite what the guide books tell you there are two spots to see penugins:

  1. Stony Point
  2. Boulders

We heard afterwards that Stony Point was actually a better spot, but we didn’t know that at the time so we went to boulders. The kids loved it!

You park and walk about 1/2 mile along a path saying hi to the birds till you get to the beach. The highlight was actually boulders beach itself which very few people take the time to venture on to. We scaled the boulders, swam in the crisp water, and found a penguin in a rock and had a real one on one interaction.

We spent a spectacular 3 hours there and then headed out to Cape Point.

Cape Point

Cape point was well worth the extra bit of driving. There is a short hike to the lighthouse at the top that is suitable for kids, we saw Ostriches and baboons, and caught the setting sun. It was a stunning view from the top.

Where to Stay in Cape Town with Kids

Stay at the VA waterfront if you can. We stayed downtown using Airbnb and it was nice, but we would have preferred to be at the waterfront.

Where to eat in Cape Town

Hands down the most amazing and cheapest Indian food ever, we found an Indian market mid town, we all loved it and it was extremely cheap.

Surfing Kuta for Kids

During our time here in Bali, we had the opportunity to see and/or surf a large majority of Bali’s famous surf breaks.

Kuta is the place we chose for our 4-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter to take surf lessons. I joined them as well for a family day of fun, sun and longboard adventures.

I joined them as well for a family day of fun, sun and longboard adventures.

surfing with kids in Bali

Our 4-year old riding his first wave

Kuta beach is perfect for kids because it has white sand and white water, which creates a very safe beginners break on which to learn.

Depending on the tide, the outside swell can be hectic, with strong riptides and decent sized swell which is not beginner friendly, yet offers a fun and challenging wave for the advanced beginner and intermediate all the way up to the experienced surfer.

Surf shops and Lessons in Kuta

It is easy to rent surfboards on the beach but for the same price you can rent very nice soft top boards from the surf shop in front of the Hard Rock Hotel.

We rented boards and signed up for lessons here. They take small children as young as 4 all the way up to 38 🙂

Starting on the beach poolside (yes there is actually a manmade artificial beach at the hotel pool) at the Hard Rock the kids learn to paddle, balance and stand.  Once they had the basics covered they head to the beach break with their instructors.

The intermediate adult lessons were horrible, so for this I would go elsewhere, but for the kids I thought this was an excellent experience.

The Hard Rock also offers free lockers to store your valuables while you hit the breakers, which is a big advantage over renting your board on the beach.

The Hard Rock Hotel surf shop is open until 6 pm.

KID AND FAMILY FRIENDLY SURF SPOTS

While I am at it, I will mention a couple other kid friendly surf spots that you should consider if you are visiting Bali.

Jimbaran Beach

I found the beginners break at Jimbaran beach on my second day when the tide was just right and you could spot the break all the way from the end of the beach.

The break is perfect for long-boards and beginners. It is a long right hand, very light and steady wave.

If you are standing on the airport end of the beach just walk about 1.2 miles and you can’t miss it. You can rent boards on the beach and they offer lessons.

You can read my post on where we stayed in Jimbaran here.

Medewei

We stopped only briefly to see this famed super-long left-hand surf break on our way up the coast from Balian beach.

It looks like a great wave for beginners.  Appears somewhat shallow in low tide and breaks over rock, but the inside wave is gentle and appears very safe.

If you are a beginner looking for surf in Bali this would make a great stop!

Balian Beach

The Aussies told me Balian was for beginners, but I would say it is an intermediate surf spot. The rips are strong and the current can be difficult to manage. The wave, when it is really breaking, makes for a rather steep curling face that packs some serious punch.

There were beginners out there the 3 days I surfed it, but unless it is a smaller day, I would opt for the pool instead.

Regardless, the accommodations in Balian are top notch, and this is a beautiful beach with great surf, a nice pool, and spectacular sunsets. That should be reason enough to stop here.

You can read my post on where we stayed in Balian beach here.
